What Is an Emergency Dentist?

An emergency dentist is someone committed to providing same-day dental care for a range of time-sensitive concerns. In many cases, your emergency dentist will also be available outside normal hours, including on the weekend. After all, dental emergencies do not adhere to a 9-to-5 weekday schedule.

An emergency dentist will be prepared to provide rapid treatment for a range of concerns. From infections to injuries, we can help patients achieve immediate symptom relief while also preserving their oral health. We strive to provide top-tier emergency dental care in Upland that makes a difference for our patients.

What Emergency Treatments Do We Offer?

Our emergency dental team offers a range of same-day treatments. Some of our most common emergency dentist services include:

  • Root Canals: Treat an infected tooth by removing the inner pulp and sealing the tooth.
  • Emergency Extractions: Remove a tooth that is beyond saving before it can lead to further problems.
  • Filling Replacement: Replace a filling to keep bacteria from getting into the inner parts of the tooth.
  • Dental Device Repair: Fix devices like braces or dentures to avoid causing injury to yourself and to keep treatment on track.
  • Diagnostic Treatment and X-rays: Full case evaluation to build a suitable treatment plan.

Signs You Need an Emergency Dentist

Emergency dental situations can happen quickly. So we recommend being aware of key signs that may point to needing immediate treatment. Watch out for warning signs such as:

  • Severe pain or aching in your teeth or gums
  • A cracked, broken, or chipped tooth
  • Swollen, discolored, and painful gums
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Damage to your braces or dental equipment
  • A missing dental filling
  • A knocked-out tooth

If you note any of these symptoms, we recommend calling our office. Even if it turns out not to be an emergency, our specialists can walk you through any steps to take. If we determine you do have an emergency, we can set up an appointment ASAP. Often, you can be seen as soon as you can drive over to our office.

Should I Go to the ER or an Emergency Dentist?

The emergency room (or emergency department) at a hospital is equipped for a broad array of medical emergencies. However, they typically have neither dental clinicians nor the equipment for dental care. At most, the ER would be able to provide temporary symptom relief through medication.

While the ER is ideal for almost all other medical emergencies, an emergency dentist is the only solution for certain oral health issues. When in doubt about what situation you have, simply call our office to see. Our trained staff can recommend next steps, whether that is visiting us or the ER.

Why You Should Not Put Off a Dental Emergency

Many patients might try to wait out a dental emergency. This especially happens with pain caused by infection or an abscess. The longer you wait, the more likely the condition will worsen rather than resolve. It never hurts to call our office and explain your situation. If you do have a dental emergency, then you will be glad you called. In general, putting off any dental care will only lead to more intensive treatments later. Timely treatment provides better symptom relief with milder treatment options.

Can a knocked-out tooth be put back in?

Many patients are surprised to learn that a knocked-out tooth can indeed be reinserted. However, it is not a 100% guarantee. Generally, to increase your chances of successful reimplantation, patients should:

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root).
  • Gently rinse it in milk (not water!)
  • Either try to place it back in the socket or store it in milk (or in saliva).
  • Get to an emergency dentist within 30–60 minutes.
